Abstract: This article analyzes the functioning of photovoltaic energy auctions and contracts in Brazil, with emphasis on recent mechanisms for decarbonizing the electricity sector through the contracting of non-dispatchable energies. The discussion begins within the context of the global energy transition, highlighting the need for diversification of the energy matrix and reduction of carbon emissions aligned with international climate goals. Next, the institutional structure of the Brazilian electricity sector is examined, focusing on the role of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and the Energy Research Company (EPE) in the formulation and execution of regulated auctions. The impacts of decarbonization on energy planning are discussed, including recent challenges such as generation cuts due to excess intermittent renewable sources and operational limitations of the system. In this context, the article critically analyzes the impact of curtailment on the energy sector, evaluating its economic relevance and its possible effects on the supply of renewable energy.
