Considering this point of view the current paper presents a study on university students from South and North America (N = 249), seeking to understand students' preference when it comes to learning individually or in teams. Data collection used a questionnaire with open questions and descriptive statistical analysis. The results, obtained through qualitative and quantitative investigations, showed that the students mostly prefer to study in teams. Studying alone appeared as the second most employed form. The study also provided information on preferred study strategies and whether the student realized that the university had influenced their way of studying. It is considered that research has conducted a reflection, which a priori, directed to higher education, but is believed to be useful to other areas of knowledge.
