Abstract: The present study aims to analyze the Active Leisure Program in interface with public policies in Brazil. Encouraging the practice of physical activities has been present in public policy in Brazil for decades. However, it is not related to the fundamental elements for the constitution of a public policy and will not be effective in mobilizing the population to regularly practice physical activities. As a methodological procedure, a review of specialized literature on the topic in question was carried out. The study is qualitative in nature. The Active Leisure Program can be a contribution to public policies in Brazil as long as it does not disregard social markers – age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status of social groups, in addition to having a public policy project to be executed and evaluated and guarantee the population materials, spaces and equipment for physical activity and hire human resources for monitoring and guidance. The negative point of the Active Leisure Program is the fact that, historically, it resembles programs in which discourse prevailed more than political action itself and the positive point is that, when considering the fundamental elements previously mentioned for proposing a public health policy, for example, the Lazer Ativo Program can be a way of encouraging the practice of physical activities and a strategy to combat sedentary lifestyle.
