Abstract: The training of teachers for Compulsory Education has been in the classrooms of Normal Schools for more than a century. Throughout all this time, the forms of teaching and learning have had notable evolutions, in order to adapt to the social, political, cultural and academic needs of the students. However, the most transcendental changes in educational programs for normalist institutions have taken place in the last 20 years. With the advent of new educational trends, related to the competency-based approach, curricular flexibility and student-centered learning, as well as the incorporation of ICT into learning processes, study plans have constantly changed. In this way, this monographic article reviews the history of Normal Schools in Mexico, its origins and changes that have led it to consolidate itself as one of the most successful educational systems in teacher training.
