Abstract: The present text is an interdisciplinary, historical and anthropological ethnographic study on Terena shamanism in the Kopenoti village, Araribá Indigenous Land, located in the municipality of Avaí, state of São Paulo. It starts from the principles that guide the “New Indigenous History”, valuing the protagonism of historical subjects who are agents of their own culture. We sought to describe and analyze Terena shamanism based on narratives and practices, as both express the way in which indigenous people structure and signify the world, even in a multi-ethnic and religious syncretism environment. It was considered as a hypothesis that indigenous people assume and resignify shamanism according to their logic given by their cosmology, since it is a practice that is returning to the community after a long period, as a process of ethnic affirmation and cultural valorization. The data were interpreted based on a symbolic analysis, as they are of a cultural nature. Cultural activities are considered to be actions in which symbolism forms the positive content and are public, observable and, therefore, describable and analyzable from the point of view of the subjects who engender them.
