Klebsiella pneumoniae: UMA VISÃO GERAL SOBRE ESSA ESPÉCIE BACTERIANA QUE DESPERTA PREOCUPAÇÃO CRESCENTE NA SAÚDE PÚBLICA MUNDIAL
Klebsiella pneumoniae é uma bactéria que está entre os mais importantes patógenos causadores de infecções dentro e fora do ambiente hospitalar. Esta espécie acomete principalmente indivíduos imunocomprometidos, recém-nascidos e idosos e está cada vez associada a casos de morbidade e mortalidade humana. Embora o nome da espécie seja sugestivo, as infecções causadas por K. pneumoniae não estão restritas às pneumonias, podendo ser diversas, incluindo infecções do trato urinário, septicemia, infecções de feridas cirúrgicas, endocardite, abscessos hepáticos e infecções oculares. Esta espécie bacteriana tem despertado particular preocupação mundial devido à crescente disseminação de cepas multirresistentes e hipervirulentas em diferentes ambientes. Devido às limitações terapêuticas cada vez maiores, a comunidade científica e profissionais da saúde têm investido com maior intensidade na prevenção da disseminação de K. pneumoniae com uma abordagem multidisciplinar, integrando saúde humana, saúde animal e meio ambiente. Este capítulo apresenta uma visão geral sobre K. pneumoniae, abordando os aspectos gerais de identificação, patogenicidade, resistência aos antimicrobianos, epidemiologia e tratamento das infecções acometidas por essa espécie bacteriana.

Abstract:
Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterium that is among the most important pathogens causing infections inside and outside the hospital environment. This species affects mainly immunocompromised individuals, newborns and seniors and is increasingly associated with cases of human morbidity and mortality. Although the species name is suggestive, infections caused by K. pneumoniae are not restricted to cases of pneumonia and can be diverse, including urinary tract infections, septicemia, surgical wound infections, endocarditis, liver abscesses, and ocular infections. This species has raised particular concern worldwide due to the increasing spread of multiresistant and hypervirulent strains in different environments. Due to increasing therapeutic limitations, the scientific community and health professionals have invested with greater intensity in preventing the spread of K. pneumoniae with a multidisciplinary approach, integrating human health, animal health and the environment. This chapter presents an overview of K. pneumoniae, covering the general aspects of identification, pathogenicity, antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology and treatment of infections affected by this bacterial species.
