Abstract: In this text, we reflect on the historiographic contribution of the eminent French historian Jacques Le Goff (1924-2014), who died at the age of ninety in 2014. He is one of the greatest historians of our time, a specialist in the Middle Ages. His reflections, however, extend beyond the period conventionally called the Middle Ages. They also address issues of theory and methodology of history. In fact, it is his latest book’s subject: Should history be divided into pieces? The book was written in 2013 and published in Brazil in 2015. We will highlight the author’s contributions to the study of cities, the medieval economy and its agents, notably merchants and bankers.
