Abstract: The infection present in the root canal system has been considered a difficult problem to be tackled for decades in endodontic therapy. Several irrigation methods, substances and protocols associated with root canal instrumentation have been gaining attention, aiming to expand the effectiveness of root canal cleaning, especially in areas with difficult access to endodontic instruments, and thus re-establish dental health. In view of this scenario, this work aims to review in the literature the main methods of activation and optimization of the action of irrigating solutions, aiming to clarify their differences, and focusing on amplifying the penetration of these substances in anatomical areas of difficult access. The types/devices described in this work included conventional syringe and needle irrigation (CNI), dynamic manual activation (MDA), Instruments for activating the irrigating solution, Ultrasonic Irrigation (Passive: PUI and Continuous: CUI), Sonic Irrigation, GentleWave, photon-induced photoacoustic flux (PIPS), EndoVac, and nanobubbles (NBs). It was observed that agitation devices and techniques can optimize the cleaning of root canals and each resource has different potentials for acting in individual anatomical situations, it being up to the professional to plan the best way to ensure adequate cleaning of the SCR, providing better conditions for successful endodontic treatments.
