Abstract: The strengthening of the Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) model in higher education institutions requires the consolidation of research and digital competencies among faculty researchers. This article examines the inclusion of these competencies and the rationale for enhancing them in line with the demands of the knowledge society, as well as for expanding scientific production, technology transfer, and educational innovation. The discussion is grounded in recent works on science policy and, consequently, the politicization of science. It can be inferred that the integrated development of research and digital skills enhances institutional capacity to function effectively within the R&D&I ecosystem. The article proposes the creation of training programs aligned with international standards to foster scientific productivity, technology transfer, and the generation of contextualized solutions, thereby highlighting the strategic role of higher education institutions in sustainable development.
