Abstract: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication, with restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. As for the treatment, there is no evidence of pharmacological treatment in the central symptoms of ASD. However, studies have shown the use of psychotropic medications in the treatment of individuals with ASD associated with other comorbidities. The objective of this review was to evaluate the effect of pharmacological intervention in reducing the main symptoms related to autism spectrum disorder. A search was carried out for previous works on the PubMed and VHL platforms, totaling 25 articles, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Through the analyzed studies, it was observed that the drugs most frequently associated with the reduction of symptoms were the atypical antipsychotic drugs, risperidone and aripripazole, bumetanide, oxytocin and melatonin. In conclusion, more studies are needed in order to determine the appropriate doses for therapeutic agents and, in addition, health professionals must evaluate and offer the best possible treatment.
