Abstract: This paper seeks to articulate certain theoretical aspects related to the spheres of prejudice and subalternity with the understanding of the unfolding of transformations of the characters in the short story “The Goodbye Forest”, by Itamar Vieira Júnior (2021). These theoretical aspects provide foundations that illustrate certain causes and contexts in which prejudice and subalternity are part of the mechanism that maintains the structures, which classify subjects based on gender, race and economic status. To establish this interface, we will use theoretical perspectives arising from conceptual horizons of cultural studies, such as the reflective proposals of Bell Hooks (2022), Achille Mbembe (2022), Aníbal Quijano (2005), Walter Mignolo (2009) among others. This theoretical outline allows us to visualize a framework of the colonialist formation of the Latin American constitution and its experiential derivations in more recent times. On the other hand, the critical dialogue with the literary text provides an immersion into certain social hardships that are recurrent in the necessary transformations of the subjects. We highlight as a reflective benefit of the investigation the aesthetic virtuality of the strength of affections and the driving potential of the horizon in which the subjects place themselves as actors of their journey and aware of their contexts.
