Abstract: This research communication outlines the initial scope of an investigation into the hypothesis of exclusionary trends in musical performance, contrasted with more inclusive opportunities in teaching. Ultimately, this research will be presented as a doctoral thesis in music. The study explores transformations in popular music as a labor activity and the changes in production, distribution, and consumption driven by technological innovations from the late 20th to early 21st century. This study investigates social relations and work processes in the musical field by exploring the interactions between performance and teaching. Interviews with musicians may reveal instability in the performance market and the necessity to supplement income through teaching. The analysis of the archives of the Musicians' Union of Rio de Janeiro will provide historical data on labor relations and economic and cultural adaptations over the years, allowing a deeper understanding of professional dynamics in music. The procedures include document analysis and semi-structured interviews with musicians involved in both performance and teaching. The primary objective is to understand disparities in professional inclusion and the factors influencing musicians' career choices, considering aspects of education, market demands, public policies, and personal motivations. It is hoped that the results will contribute to the development of more inclusive cultural policies and the creation of a more equitable professional environment in the musical field, promoting a more diverse and equal scenario for music professionals.
