Abstract: Objectives: To understand the mechanism of iatrogenesis in the elderly, relating it to clinical appearances regarding drug interactions, highlighting drugs that are more susceptible to adverse effects as well as the senile profile that is more prone to pharmacological alterations. Methodology: This is a systematic review with information obtained from 3 digital platforms: Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), PubMed; and its international medical journals: Elsevier Scientific Journal and The Lancet. Descriptors used: (“Iatrogeny”) AND (“Pharmacokinetics OR Pharmacodynamics”) AND (“Drug interaction”) AND (“Inappropriate prescribing”) AND (“Iatrogeny”) AND (“Metabolism in the elderly”) AND (“Senile organism liver action”) AND (“Senility OR Senescence of drug metabolism”). Results: Drug interaction may be more incident in patients taking 5 or more concomitant drugs, women, aged over 65 and with previous diagnoses. Conclusion: Drug interaction in the elderly is an action that can be prevented through the study of biochemical bases and individualized knowledge of the elderly's clinical condition.
