Abstract: Different factors, biotic and abiotic, influence the germination and establishment of seedlings in the environment. Considering abiotic factors, the availability of water, nutrients, adequate temperature and light are among the main factors that affect the ability of seedlings to establish themselves in the environment. Climate change has caused the occurrence of more frequent droughts and intense rains for a short period of time. With this in mind, this article aims to provide a literature review on how drought, salinity and flooding can influence seedling establishment. Drought brings a lot of damage to plants, from their initial development, inducing stomatal closure, reducing photosynthetic capacity, with consequent inhibition of growth. Salinity, another important abiotic factor, affects all stages in the plant life cycle, and can alter the absorption capacity of important nutrients and changes in osmotic stability; while flooding, as well as drought and salinity, exerts an action on the different parts of the plants, inhibiting the transit of oxygen to the embryo and radicle and may also result in a delay in establishment. However, seedlings can present different responses to stress factors, enabling the maintenance of physiological and growth activities, which are essential for their establishment.
