Abstract: Unconventional pets, such as reptiles and small mammals, have become more common in households, reaching approximately 2,5 million in Brazil. Among them, hamsters stand out due to their size, fur, and docile nature, as well as their low maintenance cost. However, the increasing population of these small mammals has led to reports of parasitic, bacterial, and fungal diseases. Among the most common diseases, demodectic mange caused by Demodex spp. mites, and otitis, a result of inflammatory processes in the ear canals, caused by Malassezia spp. fungi and bacteria, are prominent. The aim of this study was to report a case of parasitic, fungal, and bacterial co-infection in a Syrian hamster in the city of Garanhuns-PE. The Syrian hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, approximately 18 months old, weighing 100 grams, was presented with signs of apathy, anorexia, and alopecia on the face, limbs, and back. Physical examination revealed erythema, itching, and scaling in several areas. To assist in the diagnosis, skin parasitological tests, acetate tape test, trichogram, and cerumen cytology were performed on both ears. The complementary tests confirmed the co-infection by Demodex spp., Malassezia spp., and cocci-type bacteria. The source of infestation may have been the non-sterilized wood shavings bedding. Therefore, guidance to owners regarding proper management is essential to prevent infestations and diseases. Additionally, careful observation of clinical signs and requisition of laboratory tests are essential for accurate diagnosis and understanding of the involved risk factors.
