Abstract: Infections related to pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium remain significant causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, accounting for approximately 10% of maternal deaths worldwide. In contexts of heightened vulnerability—such as limited access to healthcare services, malnutrition, and pre-existing comorbidities—the associated risks are even greater, potentially leading to adverse outcomes including spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, and congenital anomalies. This chapter reviews the main types of maternal infections and their implications for maternal and fetal health, based on the guidelines of the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s High-Risk Pregnancy Manual and relevant scientific literature. The importance of a comprehensive approach is emphasized, encompassing qualified prenatal care, health education, psychosocial support, and coordination among different levels of care as a key strategy for the prevention of complications.
