Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To report the care provided by the multidisciplinary team to a pregnant woman diagnosed with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), in a medium-sized hospital, in the mesoregion of central Goiás, Brazil, Central. METHOD: Exploratory-descriptive clinical case study, whose information was obtained through medical record review/notes, participant observation during clinical practice and literature review. THE CLINICAL CASE: I.R.S, 38 years old, married, with higher education in the health field, self-declared mixed race. First pregnancy, initially considered low-risk prenatal care (PN). In the third trimester, he presented with persistent nocturnal fever, arthralgia, petechiae in the abdominal region, edema in the lower limbs and thrombocytopenia, suggesting systemic infection or hematological disease to be clarified. Regarding the fetus: the presence of ascites was revealed. Premature birth, newborn diagnosed with vertical human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, treated and with sequelae of: autism, dormant hair cells and motor disability. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: Prevention of HCMV infection in pregnant women is essential as exposure to infected patients is one of the main routes of transmission of the virus. It is necessary to adopt appropriate measures to reduce the risk of infection, which include the use of personal protective equipment, hygiene practices and clinical case management.
