Abstract: This study presents the progress of master's research that aims to investigate the pedagogical practices of Colégio Casa Pia de Órfãos de São Joaquim, aimed at the ethical and moral training of poor children, orphans and portions collected, between the years 1824 and 1855 in Salvador/BA, a period simultaneously with the process of building the National State of Brazil. Educational legislation and regulations in force at the time, minutes of the Administrative Board, reports from provincial presidents and teachers, enrollment book, student folder, as well as periodicals that were circulating at the time are being consulted. Based on the propositions of E. P. Thompson's historical logic and the categories of experience and culture. Some results indicate that the institution played a relevant role in the service of the country's cultural and modern civilizing project in the post-independence period. To this end, it was necessary from the perspective of subjects from the dominant social classes to find a solution to promote the order and control of boys from the poor who “roamed the streets” committing various crimes and riots.
