Abstract: Objective: To review the literature on the epidemiological indexes CPOD and ICDAS as diagnostic methods for assessing childhood caries, addressing their advantages, benefits, risk factors, and impact on child health of the CPI. Methodology: Through searches for articles, in Portuguese and English, available in the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and PubMed databases. The descriptors used were “Dental Caries”, “Epidemiology”, “Oral Health” and “Child”, as well as their corresponding terms in English. The selected studies were published between 2020 and 2024. Additionally, for the detailed assessment of the disease’s caries, the non-indexed descriptors “CPOD” and “ICDAS” indexes were considered. The exclusion criteria were articles that deviated from the theme and were outside the time frame used. Results: The literature indicates that the CPI has a high global prevalence, with regional variations associated with socioeconomic and cultural factors. The CPOD and ICDAS indexes are widely used to measure the severity of the disease, aiding in the diagnosis and planning of preventive interventions. Both indexes, have their advantages and disadvantages regarding their accuracy, for the diagnosis of carious lesions. Therefore, a detailed evaluation of the population investigated and the early detection of the disease is necessary to choose which index to use. Conclusion: Thus, tools such as the CPOD and ICDAS indexes are indispensable for the assessment of the severity and progression of early childhood caries, providing essential data for the diagnosis, monitoring and development, of effective strategies for the prevention and control of the disease.
