Abstract: Over time, sustainable tourism has become a way to maintain performance and economic competitiveness without harming the environment, covering the expectations of tourists and the community that receives them, even with the concomitant possibility of small events such as horseback riding, trails, among others. However, it is essential to help entrepreneurs professionalize management so that they can receive, raise awareness and guide tourists. Although the valorization of rural tourism is based on the added value chain for some, others consider the three principles of sustainability to be essential to compliance, such as sustainable viability, sustainable economics and socially sustainable. The construction standard to serve rural tourism, and to not fall short of urban comfort, aims to add value to the chain, and is in constant transformation with regard to the arrangement of sustainable cities, especially in interior regions. From the perspective of the UN 2030 Agenda as a direct challenge to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this study aims to analyze the conceptual approaches to the terms sustainable cities in light of the SDGs. (BOTTON. 2021) This is research, based on a systematic bibliographic review, of an exploratory nature, whose treatment was qualitative in nature. The results point to conceptual approaches to sustainability, not necessarily converging to the context of smart cities and vice versa. In this study it is clear that smart cities do not become synonymous with sustainable cities, given the challenges related to social inclusion and part of the population in vulnerable situations. The processes of intensification of globalization and modernization of the countryside have caused rural areas to face severe transformations, especially with regard to production and work relations. Just as rural activities began to present problems that they see as increasing devaluation, as well as the loss of traditional values, forcing rural entrepreneurs to seek other sources of income to enable greater economic dynamism. In view of this reflection, appropriate alignment and adherence to effective public policies in view of collective objectives centered on more sustainable rural environments without dependence on technological support is recommended.
