Abstract: The lip seal posture, which occurs when the child's lips remain gently closed without effort, is essential for healthy development from the first days of life. This posture contributes to the correct formation of the dental arches, favoring the proper alignment of the teeth and jaws. In addition, it promotes efficient nasal breathing, which is essential for adequate oxygenation of the body and the development of the airways. Lip seal also helps with swallowing, preventing food or liquids from leaking from the mouth and ensuring that the child eats safely. Maintaining this posture from the first moments of life is a crucial factor for oral, functional and even postural development throughout childhood. The objective of this research was to analyze and compare the incidence of newborns with no lip seal in the maternity ward of the Gurupi Regional Hospital, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was developed as a documentary and retrospective research, with a quantitative approach, including the analysis of data obtained through the control and monitoring carried out by the Oral Health Prevention and Promotion Program "Boquinha do Bebê", which analyzed the incidence of newborns (NB) with the posture of the absence of lip seal, in two groups: Group 1, in the period before (2017 to 2018), and Group 2, after the COVID-19 pandemic (2022 to 2023), in the maternity of the Gurupi Regional Hospital, southern region of the state of Tocantins. The total sample was of 2,118 postpartum women, visited in the maternity ward up to two days after delivery, and the Research Ethics Committee approved the opinion CAAE: 19988619.2.0000.5518. Group 1 had 18 children and group 2 were 27 children diagnosed with the lack of lip seal since birth. Most newborns in the total sample were female (53%), 77% with cesarean section, and of these births, 80% were at full-term gestational age. During the years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, absence of lip seal was observed in 2.2% of the sample, only 18 children out of the total sample of 807 newborns. In the months following the COVID-19 pandemic, there were 2.0% of cases (27 children out of 1,113 newborns). The exact chi-square test showed that the difference between the periods evaluated was not significant (p = 0.68). This approach allowed identifying trends in the data and possible changes in the conditions of newborns based on the period evaluated, thus contributing to the understanding of the effect of the pandemic on the prevalence of changes in the lip seal of children and possible respiratory dysfunctions. Thus, the pandemic period did not affect the lip seal posture in newborns at the Reference Hospital of the Southern Region of Tocantins.
