Abstract: Introduction: ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is an extracorporeal life support technique in patients with cardiovascular or pulmonary failure. Despite the high cost, some Brazilian hospitals have already adopted the idea, making it necessary for the nursing team to act in patient care using this technology. As a result of the high technology involved and the needs of specialized care, the nursing team has great responsibility in the care support of the patient undergoing ECMO. Objective: To understand the participation of the nursing team in the care process for patients undergoing ECMO from the analysis of the scientific literature. Methodology: This is an integrative review study, defined from the search for articles in the Medline, Lilacs and Bdenf databases. Articles available in full text, published in any language, from 2017 to 2021, were included in the study. Articles that did not respond to the objective, repeated, unavailable and integrative reviews were excluded. Results: From the articles analyzed, the relevance of nursing performance in ECMO patient care is observed, especially the nurse's attributions, from the insertion of cannulation, maintenance, patient recovery and management. It is identified that the challenges faced by these professionals are complex, involving the lack of specialized nurses and the scarcity of scientific evidence. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an increase in the use of ECMO, highlighting the importance of the participation of the nursing team. Final considerations: The scientific literature highlights the importance of the nurse's role in the care of patients undergoing ECMO and their responsibilities with the team involved, being fundamental for the success of the therapy. It is concluded that there is a need for further studies, integrating research and clinical practice on the subject and especially in relation to the nursing team involved in ECMO patient care.
