Abstract: This article analyzes the novel “Esau and Jacob”, written by Machado de Assis and published for the first time in 1904. The narrative is set between 1870 and 1891 and focuses on the life of a family from Rio de Janeiro, especially the twins Pedro and Paulo, who symbolize the ideological oppositions between monarchism and republicanism. Through the disputes between the brothers, Machado de Assis illustrates the political tensions of the time, reflecting on the frustrations of republican expectations, which, as Elio Chaves Flores argues, maintained oligarchic characteristics similar to the imperial regime. The article focuses on two main themes: (1) the change of political regime from the Monarchy to the Republic and (2) the early years and consolidation of the Republic. The analysis incorporates the ideas of José Murilo de Carvalho, who discusses how the brazilian republic, from its inception, was marked by political practices that did not significantly distance themselves from the monarchical past, demonstrating the way in which the population was alienated from political decisions. The analysis concludes that Machado de Assis' work offers a reflection on the limited popular participation in the republic that was established.
