Abstract: This paper presents the result of findings about social and environmental impacts in the life of a student at IFMG-Campus Ibirité, in which one sought to identify his perception of the impacts that the dam collapse of Córrego do Feijão Mine, in Brumadinho, had on his quality of life and on his school trajectory. The research adopts a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interview as data collection method and hermeneutic-dialectical analysis to interpret the reports. This study is based on the principles of an integral and omnilateral human development, as well as Paulo Freire’s emacipatory education, promoting critical reflection on the impacts of mining activities. The interview analysis revealed that the student express a critical viewpoint on the social and environmental impacts of mining and, at the same time, his report presents possible economic benefits provided by mining activities. This paper provides considerations that may support the development of critical consciousness in school community, aligned with the principles of an integral and omnilateral human development.
