Abstract: Well-implemented sanitation tends to mitigate recurrent impacts from urbanisation, , which have been causing several disorders and economic losses, also causing sometimes irreparable damage, affecting the quality of life and health of the population, as well as the environment. This article intend to work as an instrument that fosters awareness and critical actions, which draws attention on the impacts caused by the lack and / or precariousness of sanitation in the poorest regions of Brazil, as well as to highlight the pertinent legislation and the governmental action on the improvement concerning sanitation rates. A qualitative and bibliographic research was performed, as well as analysis in terms of decrees, laws, articles, websites of government institutions, magazines, dissertations, among others, in addition to quoted examples in the capital of São Luís-MA. The difficulty of maintaining water and sanitation structures in the current situation of Climate Change, with the increase in sea level and the frequency of floods, poses new challenges, especially in the densities of low-income populations and precarious housing. With the current technological advancement and public management together with the private sector acting more actively in the implementation and implementation of basic sanitation in the regions of the country, especially the most deficient, greater successes will be achieved, reaching and/or exceeding the objectives and goals established between governments and the private sector as well as by international agreements as advocated by the 2030 Agenda
