Abstract: Agriculture is of paramount importance to humanity, as it is the sector responsible for supplying society with food and generating income. In this context, pesticides have become one of the products that have been most used in the country, as they are capable of improving productivity in plantations. However, its use can cause serious problems for human health and the environment. In this perspective, this work proposed as an objective to find out how small rural farmers in a given community understand the risks to human health and the environment with the use of pesticides. Its methodology was a study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, of a descriptive nature. For data collection, a semi-structured questionnaire was applied through interviews with the population of the rural area, in the Jurema and Jureminha communities in the municipality of Milagres - CE. The results of this study showed us that 100% of the farmers interviewed use pesticides in their plantations, however, they do not use safety equipment to apply these pesticides, where we found that 58% do not use these EPI's to keep themselves safe. safe handling of these chemicals. It should also be noted that 61% of farmers receive instructions from professionals to apply pesticides, however, as already highlighted, they do not use PPE. A relevant piece of data is that even without using PPE, only 17% of the interviewees have ever felt unwell after applying pesticides. It can also be observed that economic, political and social factors directly influence the issues of pesticides linked to peasant communities and that farmers need to have a look that makes visible their health and the environment in which they are inserted, as it must be emphasized that there are no stocks of sustainable practices by farmers.
