Abstract: Vitamin D, a fat-soluble prohormone, is crucial for oral health, influencing bone metabolism, tooth formation, immune response, and tissue healing. Synthesized in the skin through UVB exposure and obtained via diet/supplementation, its deficiency can lead to hypocalcemia, osteoporosis, enamel hypoplasia, and increased caries susceptibility, besides impacting implant osseointegration and bone graft healing. Vitamin D improves bone density and periodontal regeneration by modulating immune response and reducing inflammation; adequate levels are associated with shorter hospital stays, lower incidence of hospital-acquired infections, and reduced mortality. In dentistry, this is relevant for invasive procedures, promoting healing and reducing postoperative complications. Monitoring 25(OH)D levels is important, especially in children (due to caries prevalence). A detailed anamnesis and, if necessary, evaluation of serum vitamin D levels in dental practice, seeking a multidisciplinary approach, are recommended. Genetic tests for VDR polymorphisms can also aid in understanding caries susceptibility.
