Abstract: Introduction: Anemia is a pathology that results from a lack of red blood cells or dysfunctional blood cells in the body and iron deficiency is the main cause. This pathology has affected around 42% of pregnant women worldwide. However, a lack of iron in pregnant women can cause low birth weight as well as a reduction in gestation periods. Methodology: The method of choice for the construction of this work was qualitative, which seeks an understanding of - The complications caused by the decrease in iron during the gestational period and recorded the information descriptively and through tables. As an inclusion criterion for bibliographic references for the development of this work, articles from the years 2011 to 2023 were used, available in the following languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish. Used as research search platforms - Pubmed, Scielo and Lilacs. Following the search descriptors - Iron deficiency anemia, anemia during pregnancy, anemia laboratory tests. Result: The authors described iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy as a condition of deficiency in iron production, therefore during pregnancy there is a demand for iron by the body, which makes it necessary to have an adequate diet, in addition to the use of supplements. During pregnancy, the authors highlighted that when the diet does not meet the demand for iron reserves, the body develops anemia and, if left untreated, can lead to serious complications, such as premature birth, low birth weight and increased risk of infections. Conclusion: Increased iron needs during pregnancy make pregnant women more susceptible to deficiency, which can lead to complications such as premature birth. Therefore, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which includes iron supplementation and a diet rich in foods that promote the absorption of the mineral, are essential to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
