Abstract: This essay originates from questions about the social roles attributed to women in textbooks based on an analysis of image and textual representations of families. It raises possible essentializations of these women's bodies that can contribute to the perpetuation of stereotypes linked to social markers that permeate the overlapping of gender and race relations in the school environment. With an interdisciplinary approach to gender and family studies, it aims to provoke reflections on the power of visual languages and the necessary preparation for (re)reading their symbols, in an educational scenario where teaching manuals continue to appear as basic and important instruments mediators in the teaching and learning process.
