Abstract: Dental caries in permanent teeth is a highly prevalent disease worldwide. When left untreated, the infection progresses and results in irreversible inflammation or necrosis of the pulp tissue. In this scenario, conventional endodontic treatment is one of the most recommended treatments to remove the infection, clean, and perform the obturation of the root canal system. Considering that the characteristics of the obturation influence the prognosis of the treated tooth, this study aimed to follow patients and evaluate the quality of the obturations performed by undergraduate students in Dentistry. Patients previously treated in the Endodontics discipline at FOUFBA were invited to return for follow-up of the endodontic treatment performed, in which periapical radiographs were taken and compared with the initial treatment radiographs regarding regression of the periapical radiolucent area using ImageJ software. In addition, clinical symptoms were also evaluated and compared, being transcribed in a structured clinical record. A total of 25 patients were contacted, but only seven attended the appointment. Four dental units were eligible for analysis of their periapical lesions, two of which contained overfilling. Despite the small sample size, bone repair patterns were observed in all teeth analyzed. Quantitative evaluation of the periapical radiolucent area allowed the observation of lesion regressions and the results demonstrated that ImageJ software can be a useful tool for quantitatively evaluating regression/enlargement of periapical lesions in endodontic treatments performed by undergraduate students.
