Abstract: The folk songs of São João de Corumbá-MS, rooted in local culture and sung during the Banho de São João ceremony, hold a universe of meanings in their lyrics and melodies that reveal the cultural identity of the people of Corumbá. This article, based on discursive semiotics, aims to investigate the cultural identity of Corumbá in two songs from different sources: the booklet "Corumbá e o Banho de São João: História e Cultura" (2023) and the document prepared by Iphan - Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional "Dossiê de Registro Banho de São João de Corumbá/Ladário - MS: subsídios para registro como Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial Brasileiro" (2019). As specific objectives, this study aims to: a) explore the history of Banho de São João and the cultural context in which the São João songs are sung in Corumbá-MS, highlighting the importance of these traditions in the local community; b) carry out a discursive semiotic analysis of the songs, using the Generative Path of Meaning, specifically discursive semantics, and with the analysis of figurativeness to investigate the underlying meanings conveyed through the language of the songs and how these songs reflect and influence the cultural identity of the people of Corumbá. The research is characterized as qualitative, using the following procedures: insertion of the full text of the original documents and analysis of the statements through discursive semiotics, considering that, as Tatit (2001), in this research we will only consider the analysis through the lyrics. Furthermore, it is on the songs sung during the descent of the andores with the image of São João through the historic hills of Corumbá-MS that this study focuses, seeking to understand its role in the local tradition. The article contributes to the understanding of Corumbá folk culture and highlights the importance of São João songs in the construction of local identity, paving the way for future research.
