Abstract: A problem that afflicts humanity is the decrease in the availability of fresh water for human consumption generated by excessive extraction, irresponsible use, contamination of aquifers, among others. This chapter refers to the feasibility of the implementation of artificial wetlands for wastewater treatment; the different existing types are differentiated; mathematical models for their design are shown; as well as the main interactions that exist in an artificial wetland, both physical, chemical, and biological. The characteristics of the flora and fauna necessary for its implementation are described. Finally, some examples are mentioned in which these designs have been implemented and their performance has been favorable.
