HORTICULTURA DO MARANHÃO PORTUGUÊS NOS SÉCULOS XVII E XIX: CONTRIBUIÇÕES DA PESQUISA DOCUMENTAL A PARTIR DAS OBRAS DOS MISSIONÁRIOS CRISTÓVÃO DE LISBOA E FRANCISCO DE NOSSA SENHORA DOS PRAZERES
Quando os primeiros colonizadores europeus chegaram à nova terra no século XVI, tinham a preocupação de encontrar sucedâneos das especiarias orientais. Alguns desses registros podem ser encontrados em obras escritas por missionários europeus relatando sobre esses recursos. Pesquisas documentais de obras raras, auxiliam a compor a história natural das plantas úteis, como por exemplo, fornecendo informações importantes acerca da sua dispersão, bem como, dos intercâmbios que se deram entre as espécies cultivadas, são algumas das pistas que pesquisas desse tipo podem ajudar a elucidar. O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer o resgate histórico da horticultura portuguesa no Maranhão (plantas medicinais e alimentares) nos séculos XVII e XIX, baseada em fontes documentais históricas

Abstract:
When the first European colonizers arrived in the new land in the 16th century, they were concerned to find substitutes for the oriental spices. Some of these records can be found in works written by European missionaries reporting on these resources. Documentary research of rare works helps to compose the natural history of useful plants, for example, by providing important information about their dispersion, as well as the exchanges that took place between the cultivated species. The objective of this work is to rescue the history of Portuguese horticulture in Maranhão (medicinal and food plants) in the 17th and 19th centuries, based on historical documentary sources
