Abstract: In current times, it is increasingly necessary to implement public educational policies to promote ethnic-racial equity. In this endeavor, the agendas of the Roma Peoples (Gypsy Peoples) present advances with the proposal to make the teaching of Brazilian Gypsy History and Culture mandatory in the school curriculum (PL 1387/2022). Gypsy people are part of the category of Brazilian Traditional Peoples and Communities, which are currently demanding recognition and social rights. The vulnerable situation of gypsies is the result of anti-gypsyism, lack of investment in public policies and ignorance of their ancient history. Various historical sources (royal decrees, overseas correspondence, travellers' reports, iconography, oral tradition) prove that the gypsy presence in Brazil began with the arrival of the exiled Calons during the first century of Portuguese colonization in America. In the colonial cities of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, gypsy people built ethnic territories, integrated coastal fortifications, worked on public works and performed various cultural shows, originating the circus tradition in America. Now, if gypsy people have participated in the historical processes of formation of Brazil for centuries, why do we learn so little about their contributions? After all, what do we know about Brazilian gypsy people? Where are the gypsy people in textbooks? Based on these central questions, this article will problematize the historical construction of the category of peoples generically known as “gypsy peoples” and will present the importance of decolonial epistemology for the consolidation of the field of Romani History (Gypsy History) and for the development of educational materials aimed at Teaching the History and Cultures of Gypsy Peoples in Brazilian schools.
