Abstract: Therapeutic hypothermia is considered an adjunctive treatment for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in newborns over 35 weeks of gestational age and weighing more than 1800 grams. It involves cooling the body to a temperature of 33.5 degrees, for a maximum period of 72 hours. This procedure decreases cellular metabolism and hypoxic-ischemic insult in neuronal cells. This study aimed to evaluate and discuss therapeutic hypothermia in critically ill patients in the neonatal ICU, based on a literature review. Aiming to understand the mechanism of action of therapeutic hypothermia, seek evidence in the literature to establish the type of newborn candidate for therapeutic hypothermia, describe the protocol used and the care that involves the management of newborns in therapeutic hypothermia.
