Abstract: Swallowing is a process that involves structures related to the mouth, throat and esophagus, coordinated by the nervous system to move food from the mouth to the stomach. Neurological injuries can cause neurological dysphagia, affecting swallowing, nutrition, lung health and oral hygiene. This summary emphasizes the role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in the treatment of neurogenic dysphagia, focusing on oral hygiene to maintain oral health, in accordance with CFFa Resolution n° 492/2016. The objective is to highlight the importance of speech therapy intervention in the oral cleaning of patients with neurogenic dysphagia, a function within the professional's competence. The methodology consisted of reviewing literature from databases such as Scielo, LILACS and MEDLINE, using keywords such as "Dysphagia", "Oral Hygiene" and "Speech Therapy". Five articles were selected after careful analysis. The results demonstrated that a lack of oral hygiene in dysphagic patients can worsen swallowing, cause bacterial inflammation and oral diseases. Here, the speech therapist plays a crucial role in promoting quality of life by improving oral hygiene. In summary, oral hygiene is essential to prevent complications in patients with neurogenic dysphagia, highlighting the essential role of the speech therapist in maintaining oral hygiene in all phases of this condition.
