Abstract: Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes varicella or chickenpox. The condition is common among older adults and immunocompromised individuals, with an annual incidence of 3 to 5 cases per 1,000 people over 60. Reactivation of the virus is often triggered by stress, aging, or immunosuppression. Clinically, it presents as a unilateral vesicular rash and severe pain, with postherpetic neuralgia being a common complication. Diagnosis is primarily clinical but may require laboratory tests in atypical cases. Treatment includes antivirals and adjunctive pain medications. Vaccination, particularly with Shingrix, is effective in preventing the disease and its complications. A comprehensive approach that encompasses epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention is crucial for improving management and reducing the impact of herpes zoster.
