Abstract: The beneficial elements are not considered a limiting factor for the production of plants, but they are important for their growth and development. Among the beneficial elements, Cobalt (Co) stands out, an essential component of several enzymes, including enzymes involved in legume nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation. Recent research efforts demonstrate the importance of Co in plant metabolism. However, due to its still poorly understood effect, the objective was to review the importance of Co as a potential micronutrient in mitigating abiotic stress. Studies detail that under water stress, Co seems to favor vegetative growth and yield by increasing the content and efficiency of auxins and cytokinins in the plant. Under salt stress, in turn, the plant response to Co supplementation is no different. The use of this element also acts by inhibiting the production of ethylene by regulating the expression of the enzyme aminocyclopropanecarboxylate oxidase (ACC oxidase), one of the enzymes associated with the ethylene synthesis pathway. Therefore, Co exerts several beneficial effects for plants, but all this depends on the amount supplied, considering that the limit between benefits and toxicity is very narrow. In this way, scientific studies are necessary to indicate the adequate concentration of Co, respecting the uniqueness of each species, as a way of maximizing the potential of this element.
