Abstract: Introduction: Hiatal hernia is a medical condition that affects a significant portion of the population and presents an important clinical challenge, both in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, it arouses interest in several areas of medicine and is a relevant topic for scientific investigations due to its prevalence and complexity. Objective: Understand the anatomical, pathophysiological aspects, causes, symptoms, diagnostic and treatment options of hiatus hernia, as well as its clinical implications. Methodology: The present study is a bibliographic review article related to hiatus hernia, carried out between November and December 2023, 11 articles were selected, in which the review of articles was carried out in the Scientific Eletronic electronic library database Library Online (SCIELO), UFPE Nursing Magazine and PubMed Central (PMC). The following selection criteria were defined: full texts, books, analysis and systematic reviews, between the years 2010 and 2023, in Portuguese and English. Results: Analysis of hiatal hernia shows type 1 or sliding hiatal hernia as the most common. This condition has several clinical implications and varied symptoms, with heartburn and regurgitation being the most common, which is why it requires a multifaceted diagnosis and appropriate non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment, which can also be surgical. Furthermore, it should be noted that, regardless of which management is chosen, the central objective is to alleviate symptoms, prevent complications associated with gastroesophageal reflux and, when necessary, repair the herniated anatomy. Conclusions: It is concluded that hiatal hernia has multiple and major impacts on the lives of sufferers and therefore requires an early differential diagnosis, with adequate quality treatment in order to reduce the risk of complications and improve the quality of life of patients.
