Abstract: This work aims to problematize the recommendation of physical exercise practices and body care within the scope of the Grupo Escolar Barão de Mipibu, an institution created in 1909 in the city of São José de Mipibu, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. We take as a time frame the period between the years 1916 and 1920, referring to the years between the publication of the law that reorganized primary education in the state and the date of the records still accessible from this institution referring to the first years of implementation of the aforementioned regulation. Regarding the theory, we are based on Gatti Júnior (2002), Pinheiro (2002) and Souza (2000) in order to create an understanding about the type of school group institution in the Brazilian republican scenario, as well as the concepts of school culture recommended by Viñão Frago (1995) and physical culture by Soares Júnior (2019). Methodologically, we are guided by a documentary study from a historical perspective according to the guidelines of Chartier (1990) and Nunes and Carvalho (2005). Finally, we understand that the institution in question recommended a set of classes that included physical exercises as a way of modeling and disciplining bodies to become healthy and able to serve the country in the future.
