Abstract: Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) exhibits variations in incidence according to various factors, although there are still not enough studies to determine its incidence in the current context. Diagnosing and addressing NTG is challenging, especially in early stages, as patients typically do not manifest clear symptoms until the disease has advanced. The treatment of NTG involves reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) through the use of hypotensive eye drops, laser trabeculoplasty, and, in cases of progression, surgical procedures such as trabeculectomy. Additionally, careful monitoring is essential to track the disease’s progression. Recent studies investigate the role of ocular blood flow in the pathogenesis of NTG, with medications such as Unoprostone, Betaxolol, Gingko Biloba, and Nimodipine being used to improve retrobulbar and optic nerve hemodynamics. NTG is an optic neuropathy that develops with normal IOP values, and its etiology is multifactorial, involving mechanisms such as mechanical injuries, vascular diseases, lamina cribosa malformations, autoimmune and genetic mechanisms, and an increase in translaminar pressure gradient. Although IOP is relevant, ischemic mechanisms also play a role in its development.
