Abstract: This study seeks to explore the intersection between verbal and image language in the context of tattoos. The main objective is to investigate the different types of slang that exists in the Portuguese language, especially those that transcend the traditional textual format and manifest themselves through visual supports, such as tattoos. To achieve this objective, this study aims to answer the following question: "Can tattoo support be considered imagery slang?". Based on this guiding question, bibliographic references relating to tattoos that incorporate linguistic and symbolic elements will be analyzed to understand how these images can function as alternative forms of communication, similar to verbal slang. The methodology adopted combines a theoretical review of the concept of slang in linguistics based on a descriptive analysis of an argumentative/explanatory approach. We will discuss the semantic, pragmatic and sociocultural aspects of the selected content will be examined to identify recurring patterns and meanings that could characterize them as imagetic slang. It is hoped that this work will contribute to broadening the understanding of contemporary forms of linguistic expression in the Portuguese language, demonstrating that language is not limited to written or spoken text, but can also be found in permanent visual representations on the human body. To support the analysis, we turned to authors such as Preti (2004), Bourdieu (1983), Calvet (2002), Barthes (2005), Le Breton (2013), Bakhtin (1981), McLuhan (1964), Lima (2020), Robley (2012), Prasad (2018), Mendes (2019), among others.
