Abstract: For the successful germination of a seed, some environmental factors require favorable conditions, for example, light, temperature, oxygen, seed dormancy and especially the availability of water. One of the main causes of a decrease in the percentage of seed germination is water stress. In the initial phase of germination, a process called imbibition occurs, which involves the capture of water, hydration of tissues and stimulation of metabolic activities, which are essential for the resumption of growth of the embryonic axis, being crucial not only in the initial phase, but throughout plant life. In this context, the present work aimed to evaluate the germination of seeds of the canafístula species subjected to water stress through the use of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000). A completely randomized design was adopted with four replications of 25 seeds, and the effect of water stress was studied using PEG 6000 at seven levels of osmotic potential (0.0; -0.3; -0.6; -0. 9; -1.2; -1.5 and -1.8 Mpa). Germination Rate, Germination Speed Index (IVG) and Average Germination Time (AMR) were evaluated. In general, due to the decrease in the osmotic potential of the medium, the germination of Peltophorum dubium was negatively affected. At osmotic potentials higher than -0.6 MPa, the level of damage was severe so that there was no germination.
