Abstract: In this article we address historical-geographical aspects of corn flour commensality in Brazil and Italy, seeking to highlight the geographicity underlying commensality traditions. In both countries, we observe inter-territorial confluences that shape specific food cultures around similar preparations based on corn flour and whose origins date back, in Italy, to ancient Roman diets and, in Brazil, to the bandeirante incursions. As a general objective, we propose to understand the act of eating, and the composition of practices derived from this act, as forms of reproduction of social space. Once the multi-scalar connections that shape domestic cuisine and its recipes are made explicit, we question the commonly disseminated understanding of ‘geographic eating’ as an allusion to local contextualizations. The methodology to be used includes a bibliographic review and collection of primary and secondary data, focusing on ethnographic research in selected locations.
