Abstract: The use of medicinal plants is part of traditional Brazilian knowledge, and its usability often comes from knowledge passed down through generations. This study analyzed the role of gender, identifying the importance of which groups of individuals play a central role in the preservation and transmission of these practices in two contexts: the Agrovila de Iracema and the urban area of Castanhal, in Pará. Through a quantitative approach and semi-structured interviews with 40 participants over 30 years of age, the results reveal that women are primarily responsible for disseminating knowledge about medicinal plants, with family cradles being the main source of propagation of this knowledge. It was also observed that, while in rural areas there is greater autonomy in obtaining plants, in urban contexts acquisition via commerce predominates. Highlighting the importance of culture and environment in this process, the results reinforce the central role of women as guardians of popular knowledge.
