Abstract: Dry gangrene corresponds to a coagulative necrosis process followed by tissue mummification, occurring most frequently in the distal extremities of the limbs, tail, or ears. Its possible causes include toxins, freezing, trauma, obstruction of blood flow, or neurological factors. The present report aimed to describe a case of dry gangrenous necrosis secondary to vascular constriction caused by the umbilical cord in the pelvic limbs of newborn kittens. A litter of three five-day-old feline neonates was presented for clinical evaluation due to alterations in the right pelvic limb observed in all individuals, with no history of trauma. Physical examination revealed that the already desiccated umbilical cords encircled the affected limb, resulting in vascular strangulation. Tissue alteration was noted from the tarsal joint to the phalanges, characterized by dark discoloration, retracted and leathery skin, local hypothermia, and absence of sensitivity to manipulation, findings consistent with dry gangrene. Given the irreversible tissue damage, partial amputation of the affected limb was performed in each neonate. Thus, in newborn felines, dry gangrenous necrosis caused by umbilical cord strangulation should be considered among the differential diagnoses for limb disorders occurring during the first weeks of life.
