  • Abstract:

Language can be considered a social phenomenon that develops because the individual human being is part of social scenarios of power and relations with his environment through an appropriate use of the language depending on the communicative situation. Since the decade of nineteen eighty, Halliday (1982) proposes a look at the social aspects of language based on what he calls Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG). Halliday views language as system of making meaning and delves into the reasons why the speaker makes certain language choices rather than others, a fact that is always determined by the role of linguistic forms in their context.

Halliday examines the clause from three points of view that relate to what he considers to be the three main functions of language: language is concerned with construing experience (ideational), speakers use language for interpersonal encounters that are essential to our survival (interpersonal) and communication is realized through grammatical systems responsible for managing the flow of discourse (textual). This work aims at analyzing the textual function, which constructs the message and expresses the relationship between language and context of situation. For this purpose, excerpts from the novel Brooklyn (2009) by Colm Tóibín will be analyzed following the tenets of the Systemic Functional Grammar. It is expected that the detailed study of the textual function makes it possible to establish the cohesive ties between the parts of the text -text construction- and its adequacy to the specific situation in which it occurs -text meaning.
