FREQUÊNCIA DE LEPTOSPIROSE EM CÃES ATENDIDOS NO HOSPITAL VETERINÁRIO DA UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DO MARANHÃO

• Abstract: Leptospirosis is a disease with a worldwide distribution that can affect several species of mammals. The present study aimed to evaluate the frequency of dogs treated at the Hospital Veterinário Universitário Franscisco Edilberto Urchôa Lopes suspected of carrying the disease, as well as carrying out a questionnaire with owners to assess the risks of transmission by leptospirosis. 35 blood samples were collected from dogs suspected of having the disease over a period of one year. For the diagnosis of leptospirosis, the Microscopic Seroagglutination Test (SAM) was used. It was found that 18 samples were reagents for leptospirosis, in which the Icterohaemorrhagiase serovar was the most present, being observed in 50% (N = 9) of the samples, followed by Pomona with 27.77% (N = 5), Butembo, Canicola, Castellonis and Sentot with 22.22% (N = 4) in both, Australlis with 16.66% (N = 3), Patoc with 11.11% (N = 2), Javanica and Hebdomadis with 5 .5% (N = 1). The investigation of the determining risk factors associated with leptospirosis infection, through questionnaires, data from the animals' clinical records used in the HVU and diagnostic tests, confirmed a considerable incidence of seroreactive animals found in this study in comparison with similar studies, raising the question of concerns not only about infection in dogs, but also about the zoonotic element of the disease. The results obtained contribute to the epidemiological surveillance of the disease in the Metropolitan Region of São Luís, for future studies on the risk factors associated with the main serological variants identified, and the importance of diagnosing canine leptospirosis in the region.
