Abstract: The present work seeks to analyze how history (in the sense of knowledge produced by professional historians) is composed of narratives. That is, it is a true representation of the past based on fragmented sources, being a representation made through narrative techniques, shaped by the context and subjectivity of the one who writes. To present this characteristic of history, we explore the ideas of Frank Ankersmit – philosopher and historian known for his contributions to the notion of representation – and Michel de Certeau – French philosopher and historian, who also dedicated himself to addressing the historian's craft, including the narrative characteristic of history – and Keith Jenkins – british historiographer who writes about the characteristics of history, including its narrative character.
