Abstract: Hair disorders are common conditions that affect both physical health and emotional well-being, with significant impacts on self-esteem and social interactions. Among these, androgenetic alopecia is the most prevalent, typically associated with genetic predisposition and the activity of the enzyme 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)—a hormone that contributes to hair loss by shrinking hair follicles and shortening the hair growth cycle. Although conventional treatments such as minoxidil and finasteride are widely used, their adverse effects have driven the search for safer and more effective alternatives, notably herbal medicines. This integrative literature review employs a qualitative and descriptive approach to identify recent scientific evidence (2020–2024) on the use of herbal therapies in managing hair disorders. Data were gathered from PubMed and ScienceDirect, considering full-text articles published in English and Portuguese within the specified period. Eligible studies included clinical trials, as well as in vitro and in vivo research assessing the efficacy of herbal compounds in treating alopecia and other hair conditions, while guidelines, editorials, duplicates, and studies lacking direct relevance were excluded—resulting in the selection of 15 studies. The reviewed literature revealed that plant extracts act through various mechanisms, including inhibition of 5α-reductase, prolongation of the anagen phase, modulation of cell signaling pathways by stimulating growth factors, enhancement of dermal papilla cell proliferation, and antioxidant effects. These results suggest that herbal treatments may offer efficacy comparable to or complementary with conventional therapies, yet with a lower risk of side effects. Thus, phytotherapy emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hair disorders, especially androgenetic alopecia.
